02 — ABOUT UPPER QUARRY
The North's pioneer quarry — established 1980
Upper Quarry Limited is the first quarry ever set up in Ghana's Upper East Region. From our site at Pwalugu, Talensi District, we have supplied granite aggregate, dimension and ornamental stone to the north for over four decades.
01 — OUR STORY
Who is Upper Quarry Limited?
Founded in October 1980 and entering commercial production in 1983, Upper Quarry Limited is Ghana's pioneering granite quarry in the Upper East Region. Sited at Pwalugu on a Birimian muscovite-biotite granite deposit in the Talensi District, we have supplied road contractors, government institutions, developers and the block and concrete sector across northern Ghana for more than forty years.
The Pwalugu deposit yields hard, angular granite — well suited to the loads that roads and structures carry. Because we quarry and crush locally, our delivered cost to northern road corridors is structurally lower than material hauled from the south.
Today we supply graded aggregate (6mm to crusher-run), dimension stone for masonry and construction, ornamental stone for premium finish work, and marble-grade stone with West African export potential.
02 — GRANITE RESOURCE
What granite does Upper Quarry produce?
Birimian muscovite-biotite granite
The Pwalugu deposit is a Birimian igneous intrusion — a hard, dense, well-cemented rock that crushes to clean, angular chippings with low water absorption and high compressive strength.
Aggregate & chippings
Seven grades from 6mm fine chippings to 25mm coarse aggregate, quarry dust and crusher-run (0–37.5mm) — covering structural concrete, asphalt, road base and blockmaking.
Dimension & ornamental stone
Sawn and split granite blocks for masonry and kerbing, plus characterful silver, copper and black ornamental stone flecked with pink feldspar for premium cladding and paving.
Marble-grade stone
Pwalugu marble-grade stone for premium flooring, cladding and slabs, with West African export potential — a higher-value product from the same geological formation.
Local supply advantage
Quarrying at Pwalugu, 35 km from Bolgatanga, means shorter haul distances to northern roads and sites — a structural cost and lead-time advantage over southern sources.
Four-decade track record
Since 1983, Upper Quarry has supplied public road projects, district government buildings, dam infrastructure, schools and private development across four northern regions.

03 — GOVERNANCE & COMPLIANCE
How does Upper Quarry manage environmental and quality obligations?
We operate within Ghana's environmental and minerals framework — maintaining the relevant approvals, running an environmental committee that oversees site impact, and keeping records that can be produced during tender due diligence.
Quality control is applied across all grades: material is crushed and screened to consistent sizes, and confirmable grading documentation is available with a formal quote. Our compliance posture is built for institutional and government scrutiny — 40 years of public-sector supply is the foundation.
