Why does being first matter?
When Upper Quarry Limited was founded in October 1980, there was no quarrying operation in Ghana's Upper East Region. The region's road contractors, institutional builders and block producers either sourced stone from the south — at significant haulage cost and lead time — or worked without reliable local supply. Upper Quarry changed that.
Being first means we have been operating continuously on the Pwalugu deposit for over forty years. That continuity — of site knowledge, relationships, compliance practice and delivery capability — is what institutional and government buyers draw on when they specify Upper Quarry material on a tender.
02 — TIMELINE
From first blast to forty-year supplier
October 1980
Founding
Upper Quarry Limited is established at Pwalugu, Talensi District, Upper East Region of Ghana — the first quarry operation ever set up in the region. The founding responds to the acute absence of local quarried stone supply for the growing infrastructure and construction demand in the north.
1983
Commercial production begins
The quarry enters commercial production, crushing and supplying Birimian muscovite-biotite granite to road contractors, government projects and the emerging block and concrete sector across the Upper East. The Pwalugu deposit proves well-suited to structural aggregate use.
1990s
Capacity growth
Investment in crushing plant and haulage expands the quarry's production capacity and delivery reach, extending supply into the Northern Region and beyond. The full grade range — from quarry dust to 25mm aggregate and crusher-run — becomes available.
2000s–2010s
Government & institutional supply
Major road rehabilitation contracts, district government buildings and public infrastructure projects across Upper East, North East and Northern regions are supplied. The company's compliance posture and environmental governance framework are strengthened alongside this institutional growth.
Today
Four product lines, four regions
Upper Quarry supplies graded aggregate, dimension stone, ornamental stone and marble-grade material from the same Pwalugu deposit to buyers across the Upper East, North East, Northern and Savannah regions. Over forty years of continuous operation make it the most established quarry supply relationship available to northern Ghana's construction and road sectors.
